What are the advantages of studying at IWBS?

IWBS is India’s first wine and beverage school that is based on the working methodologies of Western and wine-growing countries while incorporating a touch of holistic Indian philosophy into it. The courses cover most aspects of wine but are customised for Indian needs and application. IWBS for starters, is the first and only Indian wine and beverage institute to be based out of a sprawling campus. It celebrates a world-wide reach and recognition and an internationally acclaimed reputation of being India’s finest wine education provider. IWBS offers a one-stop solution by offering Indian and internationally certified courses under one roof. Students need no longer incur costs of studying on foreign shores as the same is now available on home turf. This will be further complemented with young internationally certified faculty members who have worked and honed their skills and experience in India and abroad. Finally, the pricing for the courses has been done keeping in mind Indian financial sensibilities. The idea is to make wine knowledge accessible affordable and utile by allowing more young stalwarts to join the field and receive the right education at the very onset of their careers thereby giving them an edge in a specialised, rapidly growing and competitive industry.
The institute offers a rich studying experience: state-of-the-art tasting rooms, practical application of teachings with the help of an on-site mock vineyard and a high capacity wine cellar, all bringing you closer to the wine experience. Unlike other institutes, IWBS will also look into providing job/placement facilities with the world’s finest hospitality providers, winemakers and beverage trading companies in India.

Why should I choose IWBS over other wine courses?

Our intention is never to compete with other existing wine and/or beverage qualifications. Instead, we base our teaching method on a mix of the theoretical with the practical and pragmatic. IWBS educates not only on wines and beverages but also teaches industry practices. Wine handling, order taking, suggestive selling techniques, mock services and most importantly, food and wine matching are some of the modules incorporated into our courses that other Western courses often omit. Further, we would be unique in conducting a live food and wine pairing session even at the beginner’s level. We prefer to create beverage professionals rather than a mere wine connoisseur. From vine to cellar management, all that is taught at IWBS will be gradually reinforced through demonstrations, interactions and live exercises. All this makes IWBS a unique and contemporary learning environment, adaptive and responsive to the needs of the industry today.

Will studying at IWBS make me a top-rated Sommelier?

IWBS may not make you a top-rated sommelier as soon as you graduate but it will equip you with all you need to make it as the best in the business. The idea at IWBS is to develop and grow your passion for wines and beverages while imparting in-depth yet practical knowledge on the subject. More than absolute knowledge, our intent is to instil a constant thirst for knowledge which is perhaps the most inevitable requisite for a celebrated sommelier. As you will realise, a successful career in sommellerie is dependent on several elements of hospitality and general knowledge; wine knowledge although indispensable, is still only a part of the whole gamut. This is the underlying principle for all study programs at IWBS.

Will I get a guaranteed job after IWBS and how much pay can I expect?

After completing the highest level of studies at IWBS, the institute will aid students in finding a suitable placement. This would include working in the hospitality industry as a wine service assistant, or with a local winery or an importer handling training and business development. There are several other options as well. All in all, our endeavour will be to try and find the best possible position keeping in mind your special skills and your preferences. The institute shall also invite airline, cruise, wine makers, consultants and wine operators for placements. Pay scale for a sommelier ranges anywhere between INR15,000 to 35,000 per month depending on the magnitude of work and prior experience. Then of course there are perks, the surest of which is getting to try loads of good wine on a regular basis.

If I have not done a hotel management course, will that affect my chances as a Sommelier?

To gain a place at IWBS, candidates are not required to have a regimented hospitality background or experience. Everyone can learn about wines to their desired level. Having done a formation in hospitality would naturally help but is in no-way a strict pre-requisite. Proficiency in English however is a must and cannot be stressed enough.

If I do not work in hotels or in the wine trade, will that affect my chances of being selected?

Again, to gain a place at IWBS, relevant work experience and a hospitality background will be preferred but they are not indispensable. Anyone who has a passion for wines + beverages and a desire to learn is welcome. Courses are constructed to traverse this gap and make everyone feel comfortable in a healthy learning environment free from professional prejudice.

How many wines will I get to taste?

Wine tasting is an intrinsic part of studies at every level at IWBS, although the intensity will vary at each level. Apart from wines, students will also get to taste spirits, beers, cocktails, tea, coffee and other non-alcoholic beverages to ameliorate their tasting profile. All in all, we assure you that you will taste more beverages than what any of the other more expensive wine-centric courses currently claim to go through in our part of the globe in the same duration.

Can I pursue a basic and an international course together?

Students will be able to pursue various international courses alongside an IWBS course level. These international courses will allow students to attain a specialisation in an area of their interest, be it a wine-region or an alcoholic beverage. Many of these will be a part of the Level 2 and 3 curriculums however there might be a separate fee to take some of the individual qualification exams.

How can I do the course if I do not live in Delhi? Are there other branches?

Aspirants from everywhere are invited to study at IWBS. To begin with, courses will be offered at the Delhi campus. IWBS will subsequently spread its wings shortly. In case you are admitted, we will surely assist out-station students with finding affordable and acceptable accommodation but we provide no guarantees.
